A coffee lover’s guide to coffee.

Exploring Coffee Types and Regions

If drinking coffee makes you happy, you are not alone. I also love coffee, the flavor, the aroma. How it makes me feel when I have it every morning and after lunch. A cup of coffee fuels and sparks my creativity. I’m literally sipping a cup right now. And l love a cup of coffee to kick off my day.

The natural caffeine in coffee enhances alertness, focus, and cognitive performance, making it an ideal pick-me-up for busy mornings or afternoon slumps. But with so many types of coffee it is fascinating to attempt to define what is the best type of coffee. I am still actively researching and learning by drinking different varieties, I will share my top 5 choices.

The best part of drinking coffee, aside from rich flavors and aromas depending on the coffee beans, is with no doubt the social aspect of sharing a cup of coffee. One of the best things to do in life is to share coffee with friends and family in lively conversations. It is one of those small things in life that makes us happy.

If we look at the history and culture of coffee, from ancient rituals to modern-day gatherings, there is a human fascination with coffee and the way it make us feel, think and act. The theme remains the same. Coffee is a human connector.

Natural lifestyle, coffee, superfoods, healthy choices, healthy living

I have visited many coffee plantations in Latin America, Hawaii and Indonesia but never stop to wonder how it all started. Until one day some chatty farmer in Colombia told me that coffee originated in the ancient forests of Ethiopia when a goatherd noticed his goats were getting hyper after chewing the coffee fruit. I still don’t know what to make out of it but is a great way of remembering where coffee originated and how it spread from North of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula and beyond.

Then, coffee ceremonies became a tradition for social gatherings within communities, as to offer hospitality, and friendship. And this tradition continues to thrive in modern times, from the rug sellers at the Grand bazaar trying to connect to and sell you a rug; To the coffee breaks in Miami at 305, where life slows down in a Latin coffee shop to chat for 5 minutes with neighbors and baristas.

There are many coffee varieties and origins to explore. My local coffee shop menu has plenty of options to get experience. There is even a great chart of coffee regions, that I’m always staring at while I wait for my order. Each coffee-growing region imparts its unique flavors, aromas, and characteristics to the beans, creating a diverse tapestry of taste sensations for coffee lovers to savor.

I am going to share my opinion on what I consider the best coffee to drink. But options are subjective and based on genetic factors, upbringing, current eating plan, acquired tastes and even stress levels and memories. Yes we are complex creatures…

Here is a full list of coffee bean types and qualities:

Arabica

Known for its smooth, nuanced flavors and aromatic profile, Arabica beans are prized for their quality and account for the majority of specialty coffee production worldwide. It is one of the best coffee types in my opinion.
Arabica coffee beans thrive in high-altitude regions with rich soil and ample rainfall, such as Tanzania, Ethiopia, Colombia, Java and Guatemala.

👉Tip: My favorite coffee is brewed from Arabica coffee beans. There must be some emotional connection from past memories and experiences, but I promise you the flavor and aroma are exquisite. Here are my top 5 coffee bean choices:

  • Java: Full bodied, complex, earthy. Hints of dark chocolate, roasted almonds, green peas.
  • Colombian: Bright, sweet coffee. Sharp acidity. Hints of dried fruit and caramel with a crisp finish.
  • Tanzania: deep and rich, hints of black currant and chocolate, sweet finish.
  • Hawaiian: medium body, buttery and spicy with an aromatic finish.
  • Guatemala: full body and spicy taste often rich and velvety. Medium roast.

Robusta

Robusta beans are prized for their bold, robust flavor and higher caffeine content compared to Arabica beans. They are commonly used in espresso blends and instant coffee and are cultivated in regions with lower altitudes and warmer climates, such as Vietnam, Brazil, and Indonesia.

Liberica, Excelsa, and specialty Coffee

These are beans that are carefully sourced, roasted, and brewed to highlight their unique flavors and characteristics. These beans often come from single-origin farms or micro-lots and are meticulously processed to ensure quality and consistency
