But what if you are also looking to cultivate a sense of peace, balance, and well-being in your life? If so, then you need a more wholistic exercise like mindful yoga – a practice that not only strengthens the body but also nurtures the mind and soul.
Whether you’re a complete novice or someone seeking to deepen their understanding, let’s embark on this journey together, exploring the basics of mindful yoga.
Mindful yoga A.K.A Zen Yoga
You can kick off your day with a few stretches from the comfort of your bed, I’m serious! I am not talking about gymnastics or anything else but rather simple movements, such as reaching for the sky, touching your toes, and twisting gently from side to side. If you have practiced yoga before you understand, but if this sounds weird, don’t give up yet…
The simple act of practicing mindful yoga in the morning could help you to start living an active lifestyle by waking up your muscles, getting your blood flowing, and setting the tone for an active day ahead. It gives you the right kickstart. And it is an ancient practice also known as Yin yoga or zen yoga.
Zen yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga that focuses on deep stretching and relaxation. Poses are usually seated or reclined, focusing on your breathing and typically held for 2-5 min durations. Zen yoga helps to balance the body and promote overall well-being by helping to releasing tension and improving flexibility over time.
Zen yoga is a practice that goes beyond the physical, here are some beginner’s tips and one of my morning Yoga routines for a replenished breath, body, and spirit.

Here is and how I practice it and my tips and tricks for diving deep into the essence of mindfulness on the mat as a beginner.
Mind you Breathing
At the heart of mindful yoga lies the breath. I Begin by simply focusing on my breath, noticing its rhythm and depth. I always say that breath is the bridge that connects the body and mind. As we inhale, we invite in new energy and vitality. And as we exhale, we release tension and stress.
Start practicing by taking deep breaths through the day until it becomes a habit, any moment is good. Inhale deeply through the nose, with your mouth closed and feeling the belly expand, and exhale fully, letting go of any worries or distractions.
Then, synchronize your movements with your breath, it is not easy at first, practice is key. Eventually it will help you to foster a sense of harmony and presence on the mat, you will enjoy more each yoga session.
Embrace Gentle Poses
During my Zen yoga practice, I hold each pose for at least 2 minutes while focusing on my breath. Sometimes, for deeper stretches, I hold each pose for more than 5 minutes.
Mindful yoga is not about contorting your body into impossible shapes but rather about honoring your body’s limitations and finding ease in each posture. Start with gentle poses such as child’s pose, downward-facing dog, and reclined or seated twists. Remember to listen to your body and modify poses as needed to suit your comfort level.
Stillness and Meditation
In our hectic lives, finding moments of stillness can be a rare treasure. Through mindfulness meditation, you’ll learn to quiet the chatter of the mind and connect with your innermost self.
I usually practice Zen Yoga in the morning for 15 minutes, and right before bed time for about 45 min to decompress and sleep better, as it targets the deep connective tissues rather than the muscles. That’s why is so easy to practice. You can start by setting aside a few minutes each day to sit in silence, focusing on your breath or repeating a calming mantra.
Practice Visualization Techniques
Visualization can be a powerful tool for enhancing your yoga practice and manifesting positive intentions. Close your eyes and imagine yourself surrounded by a radiant light, bathing you in love and serenity. Visualize yourself moving gracefully through each pose with strength and grace.
Cultivate Mindfulness beyond the Mat
The beauty of Zen yoga extends far beyond the confines of the mat. Carry the spirit of mindfulness into your daily life by practicing gratitude, kindness, and compassion towards yourself and others. Whether you’re in a zoom call, walking in nature, or sipping tea, approach each moment with mindful awareness.
Embracing Imperfection
Above all, remember that Zen yoga is a journey, not a destination. Embrace your imperfections and celebrate the progress you make, however small it may seem.
When I started practicing yoga, It took me an entire month just to be comfortable with my breathing. Synchronizing my breathing with my body was not easy, and learning the repertoire of poses was another learning curve, but I never gave up. Today I’m a proud yogi.
Be patient with yourself, and trust that each breath, each pose, brings you closer to a deeper sense of peace and wholeness.
In conclusion, mindful yoga offers a path to self-discovery, healing, and transformation. As you begin your journey, approach each practice with an open heart and a curious mind. Allow yourself to be fully present in each moment, embracing the beauty of the journey itself. Namaste!
